Child Life specialists bring normalcy for kids hospitalized at Children’s Hospital of Michigan

Have you ever been hospitalized even though you didn’t understand why? Or had others decide what kind of medical treatment you should receive without including you in the process? Finally, imagine that everyone else is about three to four feet taller than you. Now, you have a child’s view of a hospital. At Children’s Hospital of Michigan, there are people solely dedicated to helping kids understand their hospital experiences and illnesses.

Throughout March, Children’s Hospital of Michigan is celebrating National Child Life Month to increase awareness about the child life profession. Children are invited to join child life specialists at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, located at 3901 Beaubien Blvd, for medical play sessions on March 21, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and March 23, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. During these sessions, kids will make finger casts, play with medical equipment, view dolls with intravenous (IV) lines and more. Each session will take place in the main lobby and is open to the public.

“A child’s imagination can run wild while in the hospital and unlike adults, kids don’t often understand what’s happening or why they’re in the hospital,” said Courtney Hillyard, coordinator, Child Life Services at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. “Our goal is to help reduce fears and anxieties that many patients feel by helping them understand and positively cope with their hospital experience.”

Child life specialists use play as a non-threatening way to help patients process information related to stressful medical events. During “Medical Play” specialists may use cloth dolls to show where IV lines may be placed on the patient and even what happens on the inside of the body when a shunt is implanted. In addition, child life specialists frequently provide distraction using a variety of techniques such as counting, deep breathing, imagery, play, and musical toys to divert attention during procedures. “By reducing the child’s anxiety about the upcoming procedure and rehearsing of coping techniques for use during the procedure, child life specialists can increase patient compliance. This creates a positive experience not only for the patient, but also for the hospital staff involved,” comments Hillyard.

During the week of March 20, patients and their families will also participate in special activities and receive added perks, such as ‘don’t bug me passes’ that patients can turn in for a five-minute break before having a treatment or therapy and creation of art projects using medical equipment such as syringe painting or medical collages.
